Restore and Protect Your Teeth With Porcelain Crowns
What is a Porcelain Crown?
Porcelain crowns, also called ceramic crowns or porcelain teeth, offer an effective solution for damaged or weakened teeth. These custom-made caps are bonded over the existing tooth, restoring its original size, strength, and function.
Crowns are considered the gold standard for protecting teeth that cannot be repaired with fillings or other dental treatments. Made from tooth-colored porcelain, these crowns blend seamlessly with your natural teeth, improving both durability and aesthetics for a strong, beautiful smile.
Different Types of Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are available in several materials, including all-ceramic or porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, gold alloys, and base metal alloys.
Among these options, porcelain or tooth-colored crowns are the most popular due to their natural appearance and ability to blend seamlessly with your surrounding teeth. This makes them an ideal choice for front teeth or any teeth visible when smiling or speaking.
Porcelain and ceramic crowns are highly durable and can last many years. However, like all dental restorations, they may eventually need replacement. Even the strongest porcelain crowns can chip or sustain damage, so it’s important to consult your dentist if repairs or replacements are needed.
Porcelain Crowns Vs Veneers
Both porcelain crowns and veneers are used to improve the appearance of teeth, especially front or visible teeth that are discolored or damaged.
Veneers are ultra-thin porcelain shells bonded only to the front surface of a tooth. They are primarily cosmetic, enhancing the tooth’s shape and appearance without providing added strength.
Porcelain crowns, on the other hand, cover the entire tooth, offering both protection and aesthetic improvement for damaged teeth.
Consulting with our dentist at our Bingham Farms dental office can help you determine the best option for enhancing your teeth’s health, strength, and appearance. We’ll guide you toward the solution that gives you a strong, beautiful smile.
Porcelain Crowns on Your Front Teeth
Porcelain crowns are most commonly used on front teeth, as these are the most visible and can have the greatest impact on your smile’s appearance.
Damaged or imperfect teeth can affect both oral health and self-confidence. Healthy, attractive teeth not only improve your appearance but can also make you feel younger and boost your overall quality of life.
Front teeth that are chipped, cracked, or worn can make eating and chewing difficult while also impacting your confidence. Porcelain crowns restore both function and aesthetics, helping you achieve a flawless smile that enhances your oral health and self-esteem.
What to Expect During a Porcelain Crown Procedure
Getting a porcelain crown typically requires two visits to our dental office. During the first appointment, your tooth is prepared, any internal cracks are assessed, decay is removed, and a temporary crown is placed. The temporary crown, secured with non-permanent cement, is checked for proper fit and comfort while your permanent crown is being custom-made.
At the second appointment, the temporary crown is removed, the tooth is cleaned, and the permanent porcelain crown is bonded in place using local anesthesia. Your bite is carefully checked to ensure a precise fit. Afterward, you’ll receive guidance on caring for your new crown, which will be monitored during routine dental check-ups.
